Rupa Huq was suspended from her post as Labour MP after making racist comments. Is Rupa Huq racist? Let’s find out. 

Rupa was a senior sociology lecturer at Kingston University before being elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ealing Central and Acton in the general election of 2015.

Since 2015, she has served as the representative for Ealing Central and Acton in parliament.

Huq’s membership in the Labour Party is currently under investigation for making racial statements against Kwasi Kwarteng, chancellor of the Conservative Party, at a Labour Party function.

Huq previously worked as a professor at Kingston University and the University of Manchester before pursuing her political ambitions.

In September 2022, the Labor Party placed Huq on administrative leave while an inquiry into alleged racist remarks at a conference fringe event continued.

Fact Check: Is Rupa Huq Racist?

At a Labour Party convention fringe event, Ms. Huq called Mr. Kwarteng “superficially” black. As a result, Huq was temporarily barred from serving as a Labour MP while an investigation was conducted.

The Muslim columnist faced much opposition and criticism for her remark. Huq quickly issued a public statement expressing regret to the chancellor.

The Labor Party refused to keep her suspension, notwithstanding her apology. Rupa Huq will have to continue serving in the parliament as an independent representative if the party decides to proceed with the rest.

The former University lecturer has a history of racial controversy, especially when offending the Jewish community.

The Ealing Central and Acton MP’s remarks were “wrong,” according to Mr. Khan, who also insisted that Huq was “not racist.”

Huq came under scrutiny in 2015 for supporting the expulsion of fellow Labour MP Naz Shah. On her social media accounts, Shah allegedly shared anti-Semitic articles about Israel. It was criticized that the academic writer “trivialized” racism.

2019 saw allegations against the Ealing MP for acting anti-Semitically toward former Labor Party workers. The investigation could not support the allegations. Huq was then asked to depart from the Labour Friends of Israel.

What Did Rupa Huq Comments Against Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng?

Rupa Huq has been continuously facing criticism over ‘racist’ comments about chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng. Huq was expelled for calling Kwasi Kwarteng “superficially black.”

Mr. Kwarteng was born in east London and had Ghanaian ancestry. He was appointed chancellor earlier this month.

Sajid Javid, a former chancellor, and Conservative MP claimed, “Rather than encouraging racists and others who attempt to divide us, she should know better. I am outraged and saddened by the film. She still has time to demonstrate that she does.”

Mr. Berry encouraged Sir Keir to “join me in strongly rejecting these views as nothing less than racist” in a letter to the Labour leader.

However, the party’s leader, Sir Keir Starmer, branded the comments as racist and vowed to take “fast action.”

He said the party’s probe should now “run its course” and declined to comment on whether she should be fired.

Racism Has Also Been Directed At MP Labour Rupa Huq

One of the four Muslim MPs who received an anti-Islamic package in 2018 was Rupa Huq. A copy of “Punish a Muslim,” which listed numerous violent crimes committed against Muslims, was included in the box. There was also a tiny bit of hazardous liquid in the package.

The MP has frequently supported other Muslim lawmakers like Nusrat Ghani and has been outspoken about the negative impacts of Islamophobia.

Huq lamented that the BBC comedy series Citizen Khan was Islamophobic and unfairly portrayed Muslims as being backward.

In an op-ed, Dr. Rupa Huq recently shared her struggles as an ethnic minority in parliament. The MP said security would screen her much more thoroughly when she entered the House of Commons.
