Gerald (Jerry) N. Lund, the third child of Jewell G. and Mary Evelyn Mortensen Lund, was born in Fountain Green, Sanpete County, Utah. His family relocated to Salt Lake City about a year later. After four years, they relocated to Murray, Utah, where he lived for the following 16 years.

He enlisted in the American Army Reserves in 1957, when he graduated from Murray High School. 

He completed six months of active duty at Fort Gordon, Georgia, where he attended an electronics school, and at Ford Ord, California, where he underwent basic military training. He was summoned to the West Central States Mission at the age of 20, the minimum age for ordination at the time. He worked in many locales in Montana and Wyoming.

Seven children were born to him and his late wife, Lynn. He and his wife were assigned to the Solihull, England-based Europe West Area. He held the positions of Area President for a year, First Counselor for a year, and Second Counselor for a year.
