The brutal killing halted her ascension in the New Orleans music industry.

Magnolia Shorty’s killing at the end of 2010 capped a particularly violent string of assassinations in New Orleans’ music industry. In August of that year, rapper Argell “Twelve A’Klok” White was gunned down after five minutes from the scene of Shorty’s murder.

Carl Bridgewater, the husband of bounce queen Magnolia Shorty, was found dead in a shooting nearly a year after she was killed in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In 2011, Carl Bridgewater, the husband of slain bounce rapper Renetta “Magnolia Shorty” Lowe, was killed around 3:30 pm in the 3300 block of Loyola Avenue, according to Police and the coroner’s office.

The 31-year-old was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds to the head next to a vehicle. According to Police, Carl was pronounced dead at the scene.

Magnolia and Jerome Hampton were killed in a car in eastern New Orleans nearly a year before Carl Bridgewater’s murder. Lowe’s murder elicited an outpouring of grief from her fans across the country and served as a rallying cry against violence in New Orleans. Bridgewater spoke at her funeral, which was attended by hundreds of people.

As investigators gathered evidence, Bridgewater’s mother, uncle, and pregnant girlfriend had stood near the crime scene. Alice Bridgewater claimed that her released son called her every day. She claimed he lived in Kenner with his girlfriend and enjoyed rapping and making videos.

According to a news release, the shooting victim is a “possible career criminal” with seven felonies and 15 misdemeanor arrests.

Magnolia Shorty Death Scene Explained: What Happened?

Magnolia returned to her residence on December 20, 2010, to get something before flying to Miami, Florida, to perform at a bounce-type genre festival. When she drove through the gate, another car came in behind her, orbited her, and blocked her.

Two men exited the car and began shooting through the windows. She was shot 26 times and killed in the car with Jerome Hampton in the parking lot of the gated apartment building where she lived in the Edgelake neighborhood of New Orleans East.

The shooting was described as a drive-by shooting by Police. On December 30, 2010, her funeral was held at the Fifth African Baptist Church in her hometown of New Orleans. More than 100 mourners, including Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, Mack Maine, and Birdman, attended the funeral. She was laid to rest in New Orleans’ Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Carl Bridgewater, Magnolia’s widower, was assassinated on November 18, 2011. He was recently released from jail and living with his pregnant girlfriend.

Murder Investigation And Trial: Who Killed Her?

An Orleans Parish grand jury indicted four suspected gang members on murder charges in the death of Magnolia Shorty and a rival gang member in August 2014. The accusation originated from a federal investigation conducted by the New Orleans FBI’s Gang Task Force.

On February 22, 2017, a federal jury found all ten men accused of being members of the “39ers” gang guilty of offenses. At least seven defendants were convicted of conspiracy to use weapons to further drug trafficking and violent crimes.

McCoy “Rat” Walker and Terrioues “T-Red” Owney, two of the defendants, were found guilty of murder.
