On Tuesday, August 23, 2022, Malaysia’s former Prime Minister Najib Razak was sentenced to 12 years in prison after the country’s highest court rejected his final appeal.
A five-judge federal court bench led by the nation’s chief justice unanimously upheld Mr. Najib’s conviction on seven corruption counts, finding his appeal “devoid of any grounds.”
With its judgment, the high court proved its independence.
Mr. Najib, called the “Man of Steal” by opponents, was convicted on seven counts of abuse of authority, breach of trust, and money laundering. Two years ago, for fraudulently accepting $9.8 million transactions from SRC International.
He faces dozens of further accusations in the scam involving $4.5 billion that went missing from the fund known as 1MDB, which he managed as both prime minister and finance minister.
