The Raleigh City Mayor, Mary-Ann Baldwin, said that the shooting occurred near the Neuse River Greenway, a popular trail on the outskirts of the state capital, just after 17:00 EDT (21:00 GMT) on Thursday.
The Mayor had earlier reported that the gunman was being “contained in residence in the area” by Police. He was reportedly cornered in a barn off Buffaloe Road. Raleigh Police later tweeted that the suspect had been taken into custody.
However, the motive behind the crime is yet to be established. The Raleigh Police Lieutenant Jason Borneo stated the rationale would probably “come to bear” in the coming days.
The gunman is reportedly a “white male juvenile,” according to Mr. Borneo. All we know is that he is a Caucasian teenage male and is currently in the hospital. Mr. Borneo said he could not provide any further details.
“Tonight, terror has reached our doorstep. The nightmare of every community has come to Raleigh,” N.C. Governor Roy Cooper said in a news conference.
He also thanked law enforcement agencies for their bravery and the work in capturing the shooter after losing one of their own.
Likewise, a visibly emotional Mayor said, “This is a sad and tragic day for the City of Raleigh.” He further said that everyone in Raleigh needs to unite and support one another during terrible loss. He also urged for the addressing of gun violence in the country.
