Randy Couture was born in Everett, Washington, the U.S, to Edward Couture and Sharan Couture.

Further, he wrestled at Alderwood Middle School until his junior year. He then went to Lynnwood High School, winning the state championship in wrestling in his senior year.

However, due to some clerical errors, his application was sent to the Gerco-Roman Wrestling tryouts. Hence, he decided to pursue Gerco-Roman.

Despite having no experience, the wrestler’s caliber was well recognized, due to which he made it into the US team.

Further, he helped the US team secure the second position in his debut at the 1990 Pan American Championship Greco-Roman Seniors (90 kg).

The Army veteran made his UFC debut on May 30, 1997. Further, he signed a contract as part of a four-person UFC heavyweight title tournament.

Hence, for his first match, he faced Tony Halme, who outweighed him by nearly 100 pounds.

Despite the miss-match, Randy was able to land a rear-naked choke submission to win under a minute. After the first match ended, he faced Steven Graham for the tournament finals.

Furthermore, he cruised to victory by defeating Graham in the first round via TKO. Two months later, he defeated Vitor Belfort in the UFC Heavyweight title eliminator to advance for a title match.

For the title match, he faced Maurice Smith, who had successfully defended his title twice. The match was slow-paced, while both parties were very cautious.

However, Couture held the positional control of the game for the entire 21 minutes. Thus, he won a majority decision and became the new UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Nevertheless, due to him going against the UFC matchmaker and signing a contract to fight Vale Tudo instead of Bas Rutten, they forced him to vacate the title.

Three years after being forced to vacate the title, he earned another title match against Kevin Randleman.
