Russ Howard: Career

Russ Howard, known for his gravelly voice, as a Skip(Captain), lead the team to success at the Bier. Bier is the Annual Canadian men Curling championship held at the provincial level.

Because Russ Howard lived in Moncton, New Brunswick from 2000-2019, he began Curling through representing New Brunswick during the late 1990s and won six additional provincial titles (1999-2000, 2002-2004, 2009) as a Skip.

Also, he won the Canadian national championships twice in the year 1987 and 1993 and two gold medals at the World Championships.

Furthermore, at the peak of the career, the nearest he came to grabbing a national title was in 2000, where he, unfortunately, was the runner-up.

Russ Howard as a Gold Medalist

However, In the year 2005, he joined Brad Gushue’s team at the Canadian Olympic Trials.

Although Gushue continued to throw last rocks, mostly done by Skip or Captain and Howard threw the second, the rink or team won the trails.

It provided the opportunity to participate and represent Canada in the 2006 Winter Olympics at Turin. They won the Gold medal in a match with Finland, winning over 10-4.

Following this victory over Finland, they recorded as the first Canadian team to win the gold medal.

Another record set by Russ Howard was, he is the oldest Canadian and first from New Brunswick to win the gold medal surpassing Robin Welsh’s record, who won gold in curling at the 1924 Winter Olympics.

Moncton Rule by Russ Howard

Howard also innovated the “Moncton Rule,” which turned out to be the “free guard zone,” part of international and Olympic rules.

The free guard zone outlines that until the first two rocks from each side have been played, rocks in the free guard zone can’t be knocked out of play by an opponent’s stone. If that happens, they are replaced, and the rock that hits them is removed from play.

Howard’s modified version was used in Canada for many years, which set the threshold at three rocks instead of four.

Although he played in bonspiels throughout the year in 2009-10, he did not curl in the New Brunswick, as he had broadcasting commitments with The Sports Network (TSN).

Since 2001, Howard has been working as a commentator in curling events for TSN.

Howard was named as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015.

Until the end of 2009 Brier, Howard had appeared and played in more Briers than any other player.

The 2012 Bier saw his brother, Glen Howard, tying his record for Brier appearances and breaking his record for most career games played at the brier.

Russ was also the Oldest Canadian to win a gold medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics at 50.
