Murphy has amassed over 500 century breaks and more than £4 million in prize money in his professional career. Following 2007–2008, he achieved his greatest global ranking of three, which he held for three seasons.

Murphy defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan in the final to win the Champion of Champions title on November 12, 2017. Murphy defeated Luo Honghao 10-0 in the 2019 World Snooker Championship opening round, becoming the second player to complete a whitewash at the world championships.

Snooker Star Shaun Murphy Weight Loss Journey

Shaun Murphy disclosed he had undergone gastric sleeve surgery to help him reduce weight and revitalize his snooker career after becoming tired of being “fat-shamed” on social media.

After reaching the peak of his mental health and experiencing intolerable public and social media abuse, he decided to undergo surgery.

The Essex potter is thrilled with the transformation after losing four stone in three and a half months following surgery. Murphy told the BBC that he only wished he had done it 20 years ago. It feels like it’s altered my life for the better.

The 40-year-old underwent surgery in May to remove 80% of his stomach, making it very difficult to gain weight again. Since then, he has shed four stone, and he now hopes his newfound leanness will enable him to succeed at the table.

Since breaking into the spotlight in 2005 as the lowest-ranked player in history to win the World Snooker Championship at 22, Murphy has consistently won tournaments and been a fixture in the top 10 rankings.

However, despite making it to the World final in 2021, his last tournament victory occurred in February 2020, and only two of his events previous season saw him get past the second round.

Due to the continuous neck and back discomfort, the dissolution of his marriage, and the online harassment he received due to his weight, those bad performances led him to conclude that surgery was the best course of action.

Shaun Murphy Illness And Surgery Update

Shaun Murphy is physically fit as of November 2022. However, Shaun faced a mental breakdown after being body-shamed by people on social media. As a result, Shaun Murphy underwent gastric sleeve surgery to revive his flagging career.

After reaching the 2021 World Championship final and losing to Mark Selby, Murphy endured one of his most challenging seasons.

Most ranking competitions saw him eliminated in the first round, including a loss in the first round against amateur Si Jiahui at the UK Championship, where Murphy felt it was “unfair” to compete against players of that caliber.

He apologized for his remarks a day later, but his performance didn’t significantly improve in the second half of the season.

So, the 2005 world champion acknowledged that his decision was influenced by the agony of being “fat-shamed” on social media, the dissolution of his marriage last year, and ongoing injury issues. The now-40-year-old Murphy wants to change everything on and off the table.

Murphy told Sportsmail, “I’ve had a lot of things going on in my life which contributed to the worst season of my career last season.” It’s been difficult, and I’ve always had a weight issue.”
