Following a brief illness, a former MSP and prominent campaigner for the town of Ayr passed suddenly.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney called him a “lovely colleague and friend.” At the same time, South Scotland MSP Alex Salmond expressed him as someone who had made an engaging and positive contribution to Scottish politics over many years.

After the SDP and Liberal Parties merged in the 1980s, Brodie, a former member of the Liberal Party, switched to the Lib Dems. In 1995, Surrey Heath council in England elected him.

He had run for the Liberal Democrats in several seats by 2011, including Glasgow, Inverclyde, and Perth. He had previously joined the SNP & ran for the Ayr seat in the 2011 Scottish Parliament on behalf of the group.

 The South of Scotland elected him as a regional list MSP, a position he held up until 2016. He left the SNP in 2017, started his party, Scotia Future, in 2020, and ran for the Ayr seat again in 2021.
