Authorities in Peru investigated the death of Welsh rugby icon Eddie Butler, discovered in a sleeping bag at the start of the trek to Machu Picchu on a charity fundraiser.

Butler’s body was discovered inside his tent at a campsite near the start of the Inca trek to Machu Picchu on Thursday morning.

The Welsh rugby legend, who later became a well-known commentator, was part of a delegation of fundraisers in Peru for the organization Prostate Cymru.

Butler was discovered by the tour company that had carried him to the campsite, and the incident was attended by cops from the local Ollantaytambo Police station.

Diario Correo, a Peruvian newspaper, published a photo of locals transporting Butler away from the scene on a stretcher.

According to the South American news outlet info bar, Police and prosecutors have initiated an investigation, but no information about the possible cause of death has been disclosed.

Kilometer 82, where Butler was discovered, is a four-day hike from Machu Picchu, with the campground adjacent to the town and the Inca archeological site of Ollantaytambo near Cuzco.

Meanwhile, tributes to Butler have poured in, with BBC presenter Gabby Logan and former Wales flanker Sam Warburton leading the way.

Butler began commentating alongside veteran Bill McLaren, and once McClaren retired, Butler took over as the BBC’s primary Rugby Union pundit.

Butler provided archery commentary at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He was a member of the Invictus Games commentary crew. He also worked on football-related jobs, such as a special interview with Eric Cantona for the FA Cup Final edition of Grandstand in 1994.
