Savukku Shankar In Jail: Why Was He Arrested?

Savukku Shankar was recently arrested after it was claimed that he said the country’s higher courts are “riddled with corruption.” The court used that statement as the grounds for filing a suo motu case of contempt of court.

The Police detained Shankar immediately, and he was later transported to the Madurai Medical College hospital before imprisonment.

Earlier this month, a division bench of justices, B.Pugalendhi and G.R. Swaminathan, formally filed a contempt complaint against Shankar over his remarks.

According to reports, in an interview with the YouTube channel “Red Pix 24-7, Shankar remarked on his statement of higher courts being riddled with corruption.

If Shankar had apologized, the matter would have been over, but he made no such gestures and claimed he had been right in his words.

The court also turned down Shankar’s request for a temporary stay of execution while he filed an appeal with the Supreme Court. The Youtuber was therefore ordered to be arrested and kept at Madurai Central Prison by the court.

The court has filed a second suo motu contempt case against the Youtuber, the first case concerning tweets the user had sent about Justice Swaminathan.

Throughout the hearing, Shankar argued that Justice Swaminathan was ineligible to preside over his case because the counselor had made comments about him.

After seeing the disputed tweets, the judge pointed out that he had notified the court registry and requested that it bring the situation before the Chief Justice’s bench.
