No, Maurice Clarett is not in jail. Clarett was released in 2010 after serving his time in prison.

Clarett was detained in Columbus in the early morning of August 9, 2006, after making an illegal U-turn and leading police on a chase in a sports utility vehicle allegedly belonging to his uncle. The chase ended in a nearby restaurant parking lot after Clarett drove over a police spike strip.

Police said they had to wrap a handkerchief around Clarett’s lips after allegedly spat at them.

Officers recovered a katana, a zanbat, a loaded AK-47 version, and two loaded handguns in his vehicle, according to Columbus Police Sgt. Mike Woods, as well as an open bottle of Grey Goose vodka.

The police asked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to trace the firearms to see if Clarett had broken any federal gun laws.

Clarett was subdued with mace after attempts to stop him with a Taser proved fruitless owing to his Kevlar body armor.

Clarett entered a guilty plea to the charges on September 18 as part of a plea agreement that included these incidents and the prior robbery charges.

Judge David Fais sentenced Maurice to seven and a half years in prison, with the option of requesting early release after three and a half years. The prosecution agreed not to object to Clarett’s application for early release as part of the plea bargain.

Clarett was transferred to a close-security jail in a single-person cell at Toledo Correctional Institution on December 14, where he could eat and exercise with other inmates.

While completing his sentence at the Toledo Correctional Institution, Clarett participated in a distance-learning program at Ohio University, working for a bachelor’s degree in Geriatrics and Gerontology.

Clarett was granted early release by Judge Fais on April 7, 2010. Clarett was sentenced to up to 6 months in Maryhaven, a halfway home in Columbus.

Maurice Clarett is involved in his private business and has some involvement in politics.

Clarett launched The Red Zone, a behavioral health agency in Youngstown, Ohio, in 2016. The organization offers mental health treatments, addiction and recovery assistance, school-based social work, and various other programs.

According to a report provided by Youngstown City Schools in 2018, 283 students who got services from The Red Zone had their GPA raised by an average of 16.5%.

The former American footballer appeared on the Business and Biceps podcast with Cory Gregory and John Fosco in 2018. Business & Biceps has consistently ranked towards the top of the business podcast rankings and in the top 100 overall podcasts on Apple’s iTunes store.

Clarett worked as a consultant to University athletic departments such as the University of Connecticut in 2021, mentoring players and encouraging them to prioritize their mental health.
