Early Career

Kelly began her professional career in 2001 after joining the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA).

In her debut year, she won the 2001 Rookie of the Year award. Again in 2003, with her excellent skills, she won the 2003 U.S. Women’s Open.

After PWBA ceased its operations in 2003, Kelly began bowling in the PBA Eastern Region after opening its membership to women in April 2004.

On June 4, 2006, Kelly became the first female professional bowler to earn a PBA Tour Exemption for the 2005-06 season. With this achievement, she was able to participate in all PBA events of the season.

Overwhelmed and proud of her achievement, Kelly said, “To be the first woman is huge…words can’t even describe the feeling.”

She added, “I feel confident I can be a good enough competitor to stay out on Tour. My next goal is to make a television show and become the first woman to win a PBA Tour title.”

However, in the 2006-07 season, she finished 54th in points and lost her PBA exempt status. She was unable to regain an exemption for the 2007-08 season as well.

USBC Queens Event

Finally, after a few consecutive failures, she rebounded in May 2007 after winning the USBC Queens event.

Again in 2008, she won the PBA Senior Ladies and Legends with Robert Harvey. Extending her wins, in 2009, she won the PBA Women’s Series Shark Championship.

In the same season, Kelly won the first women’s major tournament under PBA sanction, i.e., the inaugural PBA Women’s World Championships, by defeating Shannon Pluhowsky.

Luckily, because of her win in the Championships, she secured a spot in the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions, where she was the first and only female competitor in the field.

In the event, she defeated the field of male bowlers fair and squared, becoming the first woman to win any PBA Tour event.

Again Gaining PBA Tour Exemption

With this historical victory, she locked up a two-year PBA Tour exemption.

Kelly kept on marveling at the 2010 season as she won her second USBC Queens crown on April 28, 2010.

Then the US Women’s open on May 12, 2010. And, again, she won the 33rd Malaysian Open in 2010.

Respecting her astounding performance and efforts, she received three awards at the PBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

She received the 2010 Bowlers Journal Person of the Year, the 2010 World Bowling Writers International Bowler of the Year, and the 2010 Glenn Allison Hero Award.

She undoubtedly kept on continuing her winning spirit and rocked her future performances as well. With her confidence and competence, she won the 44th Singapore International Open.

Kelly successfully defended a US Women’s Title on June 30, 2011, and qualified as the #1 seed for the event in Arlington, Texas.

However, her performance was not satisfying as she lost against Leanne Hulsenberg with a disappointing 218-183.

Nevertheless, Kelly rebounded again in 2012 by winning the 2012 US Women’s Open and became the third woman to win the event at least three times after Marion Ladewig and Patty Costello.
