Ramsey Emmanuel Lewis Jr. is a jazz pianist, songwriter, and radio host from the United States. Since beginning his music career, Ramsey has released over 80 albums, won three Grammy Awards and five gold records, and has been nominated for five Grammy Awards. 

Among many others, Wade in the Water, Brazilica, Sun Goddess, and You Are the Reason are a few of his best-known songs.

On Argo Records, he recorded his first two studio albums in 1956: Ramsey Lewis and his Gentlemen of Swing and Ramsey Lewis and his Gentlemen of Jazz. For “The In Crowd” in 1965, “Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance – Vocal on Instrumental” for “Hold It Right There” in 1973, and “Hang on Sloppy.” 

Lewis won Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Performance – Small Group or Soloist with Small Group, Best Rhythm & Blues Instrumental Performance, and Best Jazz Performance – Small Group. He carried the Winter Olympic Torch in 2002. In 2007, Lewis was presented with the Jazz Masters Award by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Ramsey Lewis, a three-time Grammy winner and well-known jazz musician with more than 60 years of experience, was married to Janet Tamillow.

In 1990, one year after divorcing his first wife Geraldine Taylor, he married Tamillow, who was to become his second wife.

Tamillow was an extremely caring wife. On September 12, 2022, Lewis, her beloved spouse of 30 years, tragically passed away at age 87.

According to Bobby Lewis, Ramsey’s son, he passed away peacefully at his Chicago home.

Ramsey Lewis has had seven children, fourteen grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren from his first marriage.

Dawn Lewis, Frayne Lewis, Ramsey III Lewis, Kevyn Lewis, Denise Lewis, Robert Lewis, and Kelly Lewis are the names of his children.

There isn’t much information about his children as they have been dependent on doing their thing.

Mr. Lewis had been leading his group since 1956 and had recorded with the renowned drummer Max Roach. The song “The ‘In’ Crowd,” which had been a smash for R&B artist Dobie Gray just a few months earlier, was featured on the album and made available as a single.
