Rey Mysterio: Early Childhood And Debut

Oscar Gutierrez Rubio, who would later be known as Rey Mysterio, was born in 1974 on the 11th of December in Chula Vista, California.

There are many wrestlers in his family, such as his uncle Rey Mysterio Sr. and his cousin El Hijo de Rey Mysterio. After looking at that family lineage, it would be no surprise to assume what Oscar wanted to be a wrestler.

As he had the goal already set in his mind, He started training his well-known “Lucha libre style” with his uncle at the early age of 14 and made his first-ever ring debut on April 30, 1989, in Mexico.

He went by the name of “La Lagartija Verde” and “Colibri”.

After seeing how talented and agile Oscar was, his uncle decided to give him the nickname “Rey Mysterio.” After that moment, Oscar would be known as ‘Rey Mysterio jr.’

Being a Catholic Christian, Rey is a family man, and he appears to have a strong relationship with his family.

Rey has 3 brothers: ‘Roberto Gutierrez’, ‘Luis Gutierrez’ and ‘Lalo Gutiérrez’.

Oscar is part of an extended family of wrestlers. His cousin El Hijo de Rey Misterio is also a wrestler, and he was also trained by Rey Mysterio Sr.

Oscar and Angie Gutierrez got married in 1996, and they are together to this day. Angie Gutierrez is an actress.

Together they have two Children, Aalyah Gutierrez and Dominic Gutierrez.

Rey Mysterio: Career

Rey had been in the ring since 1989 when he was 14 years old.

He started from the bottom, and now he stands among the legends in WWE history who is sure to get in the hall of fame after his retirement.

Early Career (AAA and ECW)

In 1992 Rey was picked up by the AAA (Asistencia Asesoría y Administración), one of Mexico’s two premier wrestling promotions.

Here he spends his next 3 years honing his skills and perfecting the art of Lucha Libre.

Then, Lucha libre style was pretty much confined to only Mexico, but soon it would catch an eye of a booker named Paul Heymen.

As Heyman saw Rey Mysterio perform his high-flying fighting style, he was impressed and soon signed Rey to the ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) in the USA.

Mysterio came to the ECW in 1995 and debuted in September against Psicosis, and won his first-ever ECW match.

After this, he stayed in the ECW for few more months and fought his last ECW match in March 1996.


Debut in WCW

At that time, everyone who saw Mysterio fight in the ring was shocked and dropped their jaws as he performed his acrobatic stunts and skills on his opponent.

As Lucha libre was new to American audiences, they watched in awe as he would fly over the ring’s top and land on the opponent’s body.

This fighting style intrigued ‘Eric Bischoff’ who was soon able to make way for WCW to acquire Rey Mysterio under the promise of a big-money contract.

Rey made his WCW debut on June 16, 1996, at ‘The Great American Bash’ against Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight Champion, which he lost.

Still, it would open a gateway for Mysterio to showcase his skills to a much larger audience.

Even if he did not win the WCW Cruiserweight title on June 16, 1996, he soon becomes a centerpiece of the WCW’s cruiserweight division.

He used to fight weekly on Monday night against superstars like ‘Eddie Guerrero and ‘Chris Jericho.’

Becoming The WCW Cruiserweight Champion

Rey had already established a name for himself and his fighting style. He shined brighter than any other wrestler that was fighting in the Cruiserweight division.

He catches the audience’s attention with his agile movements and athletic feats as no one else could copy his style.

Even if he were just 5’6″, he would stand his ground against anyone who stepped in the ring with him, and soon he became one of the WCW’s most consistent performers.

On July 8th, 1996, he won his first-ever WCW cruiserweight championship belt by defeating Malenko.

After winning the championship, he defends his title against other wrestlers for the next 3 months and eventually loses it back to Malenko in October.

Even after losing the title, he never slowed down, and he just kept moving up at the higher levels of success in the WCW.

WWE Debut

After Vince McMahon purchased WCW in march of 2001, Rey disappeared from the pro wrestling scene for a bit as his wife has given birth to his daughter Aalyah Gutierrez.

He then returned to the big stage in June 2002 after finally signing with the WWE. He decided to drop the Jr. in his name after joining the WWE and put the mask back on.

Rey made his WWE debut on July 25th of 2002, on an episode of smackdown where he faces Chavo Guerrero, which he ended up winning pretty easily.

Winning Royal Rumble 2006 and Becoming The WWE Champion

One of his career’s biggest moments was upon him as he entered the Royal Rumble in 2006 as the second entrant and managed to win the match by lastly eliminating Randy Orton and surviving in the ring for 62 minutes and 12 seconds.

This allowed him to win the World Heavy Weight Championship title belt at WrestleMania 22 against Kurt Angle and Randy Orton in a Triple Threat match.

Rey won the match by pinning Randy Orton and crowning himself as the World Heavyweight Champion.

Coming Back After Injury

Rey Had disappeared after an injury to his knees, and his contract with WWE had expired as well in early 2015.

But he again made his return to the main stage in 2018 in the Royal Rumble match as a surprise Entrant.

Later on in the year, he ends up joining the full-time roster once again.

He then won the United States Championship on May 19th, 2019, by beating Samoa Joe but soon after, he had to vacate the belt due to an injury.

He had different fights against Brock Lesner and other fighters, too, but the most interesting one was the recent one against Seth Rollins, where Mysterio would lose an eye as Seth Rollins used the steel steps to pierce it in a gruesome manner.

This had resulted in many fans thinking that Mysterio would retire but again, to everyone’s surprise, he returned to Smackdown after few weeks and is still feuding with Seth Rollins.

Rey Mysterio: Achievements

Looking back at his career, Rey must be very proud of himself.

He has managed to win WCW Cruiserweight Champion 5 times throughout his wrestling career, 1 Time WCW Cruiserweight tag team championship, WCW world tag team Championships 3 times.

Similarly, in WWE, he has won the world heavyweight champion 2 times, WWE Champion 1 time, WWE Intercontinental Champion 3 times, winner of royal rumble 2006, and WWE tag team champion.


Rey Mysterio: Controversy and Tragedy

Rey has had his fair share amount of controversies throughout his wrestling careers.

The most noticeable one was when he had failed to pass the drug test, which resulted in his suspension, and all he had to say was that his doctor prescribed it.

In 2015 a tragedy fell upon him as he accidentally became the cause of death of one of his fellow wrestlers in AAA.

Perro Aguayo died from a broken neck and cardiac arrest caused by Rey Mysterio’s dropkick, but it was never supposed to end up like that.

This tragic event had a significant effect on Rey.


Back when Mysterio was having the time of his life around the mid-90s, a rumor was going around about him being in an extramarital affair with ‘Jennifer Aniston.’

This rumor came into highlight when an American tabloid published that ‘Jennifer Aniston flips for an incredible hunk’ and it had a picture of Rey and Jennifer together.

However, this rumor was later proven wrong as Eric Bischoff denied it on a youtube show known as 83 weeks.

Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero feud

In 2005, WWE had one of its most entertaining feuds between two wrestlers.

Eddie Guerrero, who was formerly friends with Rey, suddenly announced on live television that he was actually the father of “Dominic Mysterio.” Everyone sitting at their houses and even the people in the arena were in shock.

Eddie said that when Rey and Angie were having problems in their relationship. He had an intimate relationship with Mysterio’s wife.

That resulted in Dominic’s birth.

After Dominic’s birth, Eddie was hesitant to raise a child, so he pushed it upon Rey and Angie but now as they both are feuding with each other. He wants his child back.

This resulted in Rey challenging Eddie for a Ladder match at Summerslam pay-per-view, and the winner would get the right to keep Dominic with full custody.

Fortunately, Rey won that match and got back his son from Eddie.

Despite all this feud inside the ring, Rey and Eddie were actually Very good friends outside the ring.

Sadly Eddie was found dead on November 13, 2005, in his hotel room due to minor heart failure.

This had left Mysterio devastated, and he couldn’t believe that Eddie was actually gone.

To this day, Eddie Remains in Rey’s and every WWE fan’s  Memory.

Unlike many other wrestlers, Rey had the chance to put his life on the books with Jeremy Roberts’s help.

The book is named “Rey Mysterio – Behind the Mask.”

Similarly, in this book, the author has put the life story of Mysterio. Jeremy has shown how Rey was brought up and how he could get in the ring and become what he has become.

The writer explains Rey’s tragedies and struggles throughout the years.

Rey has even put his small candid stories about his childhood, such as sneaking into a bar, and what happened next was a story to tell.

Rey Mysterio: Music

The wrestler seems to have quite an interest in music as well too.

He performed on a song called “Crossing Borders,” a rap song that later appeared in a WWE Original.

He has performed few songs in his prime time, such as “Booyaka 619” and the rapper Mad One.

Rey has appeared in one movie throughout his lifetime, and that movie is ‘Ready to Rumble.’ It is an American comedy movie that was released in 2000.

Many other WCW superstars played a role in this movie, Goldberg, John Cena, etc., along with Rey.

Besides movies, Rey has been part of the WCW and WWE games throughout his career.

Also, he appeared in the game, and the players can use all the moves that he does in the ring in their video games.
