His paternal grandparents were Princess Friederike Juliane of Salm-Horstmar and Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. He is the great-grandson of Princess Madeleine of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg and Richard, 4th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
