Coolio first rose to fame as a member of the Los Angeles-based gangster rap group WC and the Maad Circle. He formed the group along with WC, Big Gee, and DJ Crazy Toones in 1991.

The rapper, who also went by his nickname El Cool Magnifico, later achieved mainstream success as a solo artist in the 1990s with his albums It Takes a Thief, Gangsta’s Paradise, and My Soul.

Besides, Coolio was also an accomplished actor, having played in numerous films and TV shows, including Teachers, Black Jesus, Gravity Falls, Futurama, Martin, and more.

Coolio Sick: He Had Chronic Asthma Since Childhood

An asthma problem had plagued Coolio, and the chronic disease had caused the rapper some trouble in the past. He has had this issue for most of his life.

The rapper had to briefly stop his performance while performing at the Hill Country Barbecue Market, in Brooklyn, in 2016 after his lung condition flared up. Luckily, someone from the audience gave him the inhaler that he used between verses of his other songs.

It was not the only time something like this happened. Coolio told USA Today that he had a few episodes of asthma attacks growing up, which put his life in danger and nearly caused his death. 

Coolio also had these asthma attacks when he played sports and had to go to the hospital now and then. Although he was on medications, it was a real challenge.

Adding to his troubles, the rapper had no insurance and could not afford his expensive medical bills while in his 20s. It led to complications, and Coolio used to suffer from a bad cold and coughing fits.

It was so bad that he once passed out on the bathroom floor. It was a near-death experience for him, but thankfully someone saw him and took him to the hospital.

While the exact cause of Coolio’s death remains unclear, studies from American Heart Association show that people diagnosed with asthma have a higher risk of suffering heart attacks and ultimately death.

In addition, Coolio worked as a firefighter, which might have made his asthma more severe. 

Coolio Passed Out And Died At A Friends House In L.A.

The legendary rapper Coolio faced an untimely and unexpected death as he was discovered unresponsive on a bathroom floor at a friend’s house in Los Angeles on September 28, 2022.

He had excused himself to go to the bathroom, but when he did not return for a while, the friend went to check on him and found him lying on the floor. The friend called emergency services, but first responders pronounced the legendary artist dead on the scene.

Coolio’s manager, Jarez, stated he appeared to have suffered a cardiac arrest. An official cause of death is yet to be determined.

The rapper was 59 years old at the time of his death. Although foul play is not suspected and no drugs or other substances were found at the scene, Police have opened an investigation into his death.

His parents divorced, and his family moved to Compton, California. Coolio has a brother named Malieek Straughter, an American actor, and director.

Coolio married Josefa Salinas for four years, from 1996 to 2000. Four of his kids were reportedly from ex-wife Josefa, while six were from other relationships. His children’s names include Grtis Ivey, Milan Ivey, Darius Ivey, and Artis Ivey III.

Mimi Ivey was reportedly the rapper’s girlfriend at his death. Her latest Instagram post shows that she is beyond saddened by Coolio’s death and still loves him dearly.
