Columbia Records offered Joey Defrancesco an exclusive recording contract at the age of 16. In the 1980s, his performance on All of Me is credited with bringing the organ to jazz music.

Defrancesco began touring with his quartet when he was 18 years old. 

When he was 22, he became a founding member of The Free Spirits with McLaughlin and drummer Dennis Chambers.

DeFrancesco was born in Springfield, Pennsylvania, in 1971. 

Joey grew up in a musical family with three generations of jazz musicians. He was named after his grandfather, jazz musician Joseph DeFrancesco, who played the saxophone and clarinet.

His father, “Papa” John DeFrancesco, was a nationally touring organist who won the “Living Legend Award” in 2013 from the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.

DeFrancesco began playing the instrument at the age of four and was performing Jimmy Smith melodies verbatim by age five. From age five, his father, John, began taking him to gigs and allowing him to sit in on shows. 

DeFrancesco joined a band in Philadelphia at age ten, including jazz performers Hank Mobley and Philly Joe Jones. He was a frequent performer in local jazz bars, opening for Wynton Marsalis and B.B. King.
