Brittney Griner has been arrested in Russia for possession and smuggling of drugs into the country. The WNBA star who plays with the Phoenix Mercury admitted to possessing cannabis oil.
Griner was sentenced to nine years of prison in Russia and expressed her views that she didn’t want to harm Russia or its people.
The arrest comes amidst rising tensions in the war between Ukraine, supported by the USA, against Russia.
The US has urged Russian officials to accept a deal for the basketball player and release her placing their demands as well.
However, discussions have been derailed with Moscow wanting the release of a notorious man in exchange for Griner, who is just a harmless WNBA player.
Moscow is demanding the release of the Russian Arms dealer Viktor Bout, also known as the “Merchant of Death.” He has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Brittney Yevette Griner is a professional basketball player born on October 18, 1990, in the city of Houston, Texas.
